new guidelines for hypertension - approach them critically - blood pressure help, medical advice and information

New Guidelines for Hypertension

New guidelines for hypertension - There has been a lot of talk lately about the new guidelines for what the healthy blood pressure levels should be. The old norm was considered to be 120/80. If it was anywhere above those readings, you were then placed into different categories depending on the blood pressure levels (i.e., Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3). Today, if your systolic pressure is approaching anywhere near 120 you are diagnosed with pre-hypertensive syndrome.

The new name for the revised high blood pressure guidelines is JCN-7 (the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure). If you have hypertensive syndrome, try to remember this name. It is good to be aware of major research organizations that set out guidelines for certain medical conditions. Look out for it in the press and in the media to get updates on the new treatments for hypertension.

If you were previously considered healthy, it all changed with the new guidelines for hypertension. It is good to be aware of what your health status is, however, be alert and do not fall into a trap of getting new drugs based on these new tendencies that may yet have to be backed by considerable research. You can think of pre-hypertension as a symptom, not as a disease. At this point it may be better to turn to alternative treatments (i.e., diet, exercise), rather than take medication.

Think twice before you decide to start taking prescription medication. By doing that you may make the symptoms even more pronounced. There are hundred of drugs available for high blood pressure treatment, and there are also documented cases when people have been prescribed them to 'try them out'.

Be proactive and do your homework before you decide on any particular kind of treatment. Make absolutely sure that you have higher levels of blood pressure and that the treatment is necessary. Be aware that blood pressure can fluctuate on a daily basis depending on your stress level, activity level, and even on your yesterday's menu! Be aware of it, but apply critical thinking to the new guidelines for hypertension.
